Step 1

1. Set up a new AV script 

AV scripts have a different structure from normal screenplay format. They are specifically designed to communicate the audio and visual components of a video. To start writing, navigate to the AV script section within the project dashboard and create a new script. 

For some projects, the simpler, the better. If you find that certain columns are unnecessary for your project, you can hide them. You can easily toggle which columns you want to use and which to hide in the "Customize Columns" section.

This feature is especially useful if, for example, your voice-over artist only needs to see the audio script for their voice acting.

Step 2

2. Add segments and rows

Next, you'll want to add segments to your script. Segments help organize your script into manageable parts. If you have an outline or a game plan of the different segments of your video, you can add and name all of these segments now.

Otherwise, you can start with an initial segment like "Intro" and simply begin writing. Be sure to save each segment after creating them.

3. Write all audio elements

AV scripts typically use a two-column format: one for audio elements and one for visual elements. Video production entails a variety of audio components from music to voice-over to sound design. 

If it's a voiceover, you can write the exact lines in the audio column. If it's specific music, you can even add links to songs or sound design examples. Tailor your AV script to your project's needs.

4. Add visual descriptions

For the visual or video column, describe what you'll see on screen such as locations, or any other important visual elements that describe the shots. Visual effects, camera angles, props and other visual components can be clarified here. It's a good idea to include reference images in the right column to ensure the vision comes through.

5. Set time durations

As you fill in the details of your script, it's a good idea to estimate the total runtime. Many projects using AV scripts like commercials and music videos have strict runtime considerations. Tracking your project's pace ensures the video will stay within the desired length. 

Step 6

6. Collaborate and share notes

Whether you're collaborating with a team or working with a client, sharing the script and getting feedback is a critical part of the process. In some cases, the script will need to be approved, even down to the word count and runtime.
