Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Portrait of a Lady on Fire • Trailer
Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a period drama set in 18th century France. Marianne is a painter commissioned to paint Heloise’s portrait. Heloise is a reluctant bride, and Marianne must paint her without her knowing.
As they spend more time with one another, their connection grows into a deep but forbidden love. There is something incredibly simplistic about this story, but the film doesn’t rush. In fact, it begs for your patience. From Celine Sciamma, we feel each emotion because the shot sits with each character long enough to see their expressions change moment by moment, until we realize the story is one of the realest cinematic love stories we’ve been involved in, in years.

The Terminator (1984)
The Terminator • Trailer
A cyborg assassin travels to 2029 to kill.
The Terminator may have come from the 80s but the premise is freakishly relevant to mounting concern about artificial intelligence. And 2029 is just around the corner---just sayin.

Good Movies to Watch on Hulu
Booksmart (2019)
Booksmart • Trailer
So rarely do you find a film that explores adolescence through a truly female lens. From American Pie to Superbad, teenage boys have had it fairly easy when it comes to seeing their experiences on screen. Exploring female sexuality, in a realistic way, hasn’t been quite as prevalent. Cue Booksmart.
Even though the entire film is based on partying for the first time, it’s nowhere near your typical teen movie. It’s thoughtful, funny, and is heavily invested in the two female leads, played by Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein. Both give killer performances to characters that have been written for real teenage girls.
As they try to cram four years of partying into one night, they come to realize they’re much more interested in finding out who they are than anything a party can bring. It’s messy and heavy and funny again. It really does not disappoint.

I, Tonya (2017)
I, Tonya • Trailer
The film goes between perspectives and makes you wonder whether or not Tonya Harding is losing her mind, or a completely misunderstood athlete taken to pressures beyond comprehension. Both seem plausible. But it’s the performances from Margot Robbie and Alison Janney (who plays her mother) that are absolutely incredible.

When a Stranger Calls (2006)
When a Stranger Calls • Trailer
A less comical version of Scream, and a typical scary movie. A cliche that does what it’s supposed to do...terrify you because it could absolutely happen. A babysitting job gone awry. It wasn’t even close to being a critic’s choice, but was well received by lay audiences. Invited into your home on October 1st.

Whether or not the choice to solely focus on the end of Garland’s life brings the late actress any real justice is another conversation, but the performance Zellweger gives makes us more intrigued to revisit Garland’s entire legacy.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Hunt for the Wilderpeople • Trailer
Before there was Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi wrote and directed this hilarious film that follows a troublemaker and his Uncle Hec who become the subjects of a manhunt in New Zealand. As usual, Waititi manages hilarity alongside raw and honest performances. Julian Dennison (playing Ricky Baker) and Sam Neill (playing Uncle Hec) give incredible performances if not for the chemistry alone.
